Our Workshops

One-Day Workshop
This one day workshop offers workshops starting in March and continuing throughout the year. Spend a day with a Camellia Tutor and learn a new skill or how to make a bag, a blind, a cushion, etc. Contact Camellia Academy for a list of one-day workshops. To be held in a design studio, you will be encouraged to try out ideas and techniques, discover new areas of design, giving you confidence and inspiration to create for yourself. Please book early to avoid disappointment as places are limited!

NEW Cushions from Old Vintage Fabrics

Discover how to turn scraps of upholstery fabric and vintage remnants to create to make something refreshed and unique that you will treasure. In this workshop you will be shown how to join and Layer up fabrics to create your new surfaces to stitch, you will learn basic machine and hand-stitching fusing techniques and applique that turn your work into an eclectic cushion cover. All materials are provided. No prior experience is needed to learn this easy and inspirational workshop.

Making Creative Curtains

Creative Cushion Making

Using a wide range of fabrics and and trims you'll be guided through designing and creating cushions that stand out from the crowd. You will explore a number of ways of both finishing and decorating cushions and be taken through the stages of the design process of cushion making. You will also gain tips on choosing the correct tools, techniques and materials and learn how to achieve a professional finish

Adventures in Applique

Be guided through many different applique techniques, with patterns projects and stitching techniques to enrich all of your textiles.

You will be shown the stages and techniques used in reverse, shadow, and machine applique and be shown how to use use stabilisers, different stitching styles and bonders. You will also be guided through the design process and learn the tips to getting a professional finish




Learn to Sew Using your Own Machine

Do you have a sewing machine but don't know really how to use it, then come along to our workshop where you will learn the basics of sewing and what it can do.

Depending on how quickly you pick it up you will leave with a cushion cover and hints and tips about getting the best from your machine plus basic sewing skills.


Fantastic Fabric Books

Create something really special in this day spent exploring fabric books. Using a whole range of techniques to make your book you can use it to tell a story or as a work of art in it's own right. This workshop will show you how to use simple sewing techniques to construct a fabric book and find out how to source and use the appropriate materials and tools. You will be inspired by examples of techniques and different approaches to the topic as well as experimenting with different types of inks, paints and collage techniques. You will be taken through different styles of artistic journal and will also examine different approaches and choosing the right approach for you

Introducing Mixed Media

A day playing and learning which medias can be mixed to create many different dramatic effects in your artwork. This day will show you how using a range off different materials combined can inspire a different approach to creating an image. Lots of different materials will be provided for you to experiment with. You will be taught which mediums work together and will explore various effects that can be created by the combination. Be inspired and exposed to materials and techniques you may not have tried before





Bags of Felt

Step by step guidance in designing and making a decorative felt bag. Learn how to felt 'in the round' with no need for stitching seams as the felt will do it for you. Enjoy working with beautiful coloured merino wool and silk fibres to create your own design. We will help you to choose wool fibres suitable for making felt and show you how to make a template for a small bag. You will learn the technique of laying out fibres to felt without seams and be shown how to add simple surface decoration and a variety of finishes for the bag.

Surface Texture in Felt - Masterclass

This is an experimental workshop exploring methods of combining stitch within the feltmaking process, creating insertions within the layers of wool and fabric prior to the feltmaking process.  The layering approach creates interesting and unusual textures on the surface of the felt which can then be further embellished when dry. This is complex feltmaking, suitable for those with previous experience of making felt by hand. Limited places. You will  be inspired by the leading tutor in feltmaking who will show you how to build a complex felt in layers, to understand the effect of one layer on another, learn the effect that stitch can have as an integral part of felt and experiment with fibres other than wool and fabrics within wool layers




Block Printing on Fabric

Ever fancied cheering up that comfortable tshirt or plain but useful bag? Why not come along and learn how to add a personal touch to your favourite items by making your own printing blocks? You will then use these to print on to fabric creating beautiful washable designs using non-toxic, environmentally friendly inks. You will learn how to create your own printing blocks from simple materials, work through the stages of design and production of a block and learn about inking and printing techniques. Be inspired by a range of examples and ideas


Introducing Printmaking

Monoprint, intaglio, relief, offset, reduction, drypoint, chine colle...ever wondered what these words mean? Join our printmaker to find out! We will not only explain and demonstrate some of these exciting methods but you will then get a chance to create your own images using some of these printmaking techniques. This course is suitable for complete beginners and artists who would like to explore a new medium.


Discover the essential terms, techniques and tools in printmaking and understand the steps involved in creating many different types of print. Learn how to select suitable subject matter and ppreciate many different styles and types of print from a range of artists.




Printing Without a Press

Have fun learning how to create different kinds of print using materials which can be found at home. Your tutor will show you that you don't necessarily need a printmakers press to produce an impressive image. You'll go home with several finished prints and a whole wealth of inspirational ideas. You will be shown the different stages of creating printing blocks and plates and how to choose and use the right inks. You will be taught how to solve the most common printing problems and be given plenty of inspiration and examples from a range of different approaches to the subject

Natural Forms in Linocut Printmaking

Artists have turned to nature for inspiration throughout history and even the smallest objects such as seeds, leaves and shells can have the most intricate patterns and symmetries. Spend the day creating designs inspired by natural forms which you will then transform into bold and beautiful prints using the expressive medium of linocut. Learn how to design and cut lino to create a relief print and to ink up the block to create an even print result. Register your prints and print your block with or without a press


Textile  Masterclass

Come and spend a day using mixed media fabric techniques to explore the multitude of ways that birds can be depicted. This is a Masterclass and you should have experience in a variety of embroidery techniques. Places on the masterclass are limited. You will learn how to find and manage ideas to use on a specific project and how to choose the appropriate materials. You will examine techniques to get a professional finish on your work and be inspired by examples and have a chance to look at different approaches.

NEW Clothes from your Old Clothes

Revamp your wardrobe - recycle old fabrics and clothes, deconstruct clothing, stitch, rip and turn something old into something new. We will show you “traditional” hand embroidery stitches with a contemporary vintage twist! using fancy yarns we will introduce you to variety of stitches, show you how to design your own combinations on to your clothes or give you project to take home so you can continue learning in your own time. This is a fun and easy way to add a hand crafted feel to any of your clothes or textile project. 


NEW  Appliqué from Old Vintage Fabrics
